White Pine
(Pinus strobus)
Also known as eastern white pine, soft pine

The white pine is a softwood evergreen found primarily throughout southeastern Canada and the northeastern US and grows to heights of 140 feet with trunk diameters ranging between 3 and 5 feet. The sapwood ranges from nearly white to a pale yellow, while the heartwood is cream colored to light or reddish brown, which oxidizes to orange/brown. Pleasant resinous odor.

Lightweight, soft, even-textured, and easily worked, white pine wood is used for toys, birdhouses, wooden games, buckets, furniture millwork, knotty pine paneling, siding board, shelving, boxes, crates, coffins, boats, wooden ware, and novelties. It nails easily, glues well, and accepts finishing treatments well. White pine does not split when nailed, but has medium nail holding ability.
