Padauk
(Pterocarpus Soyauxii)
Also known as mutui, ngula, bosulu

This wood is vivid reddish-orange, but it changes to bright red, red or coral pink, with dark streaks. It is harvested in the Congo of Central Africa. There are something like 17 known species that have been used for everything from carvings and domestic flooring to Umbrella handles and chisel blocks.

With a specific gravity of .72, Padauk is similar to Walnut in density and ease of working. For a good solid project with no worry about getting around defects, this is one of the best for color and quality. Padauk has a tendency to degrade in color to brown over time. A UV protectant varnish is advised.

Paduak is a good choice as an accent wood and for use in inlay work, marquetry, and musical instruments. It finishes well and glues easily; holds nails and screws well.
